ailahtanc:Starling.I just finished fool’s quest ( it was the first book I read in English, so it took some time) ohhhhh now I understand all yours posts and emotions!!! My god that book!!!!!Question/ spoilerIt a little detail compare to all the theories, reports on tumbr (i m to bad in English to uttered all my feels about the book) but it s intrigued me:I thought that there were different languages between six duchies and bingtowm/rain wild ( in liveship trilogy’s the ship’s boy from the paragon come from the six duchies and don’t speak well at first) and then fitz and all can speak with kelsingra people?IT’S GREAT ISN’T IT??? :DYes. There is ONE mention of a “common tongue” in the books but tbh it’s not otherwise supported. I would presume that Jamaillia/Bingtown/Rain Wilds speak Jamaillian, Chalcedeans we know have their own language, and the Duchies have Duchian. However I would also assume that Fitz is fluent in Jamaillian - he’s got Outislander and Chyurda down so I presume learning Jamaillian would have been part of his education. Likewise for Lant (as part of the nobility, remember how they import fashion from Jamaillia? I bet nobles in the Six Duchies learn the language too), and maybe Ash/Spark (taught by Chade perhaps). Beloved speaks everything of course. The only odd one out is Perseverance, which I can’t explain. I don’t think it likely that the southerners speak Duchian.TL;DR: either Jamaillian is commonly learnt in the Duchies/learnt by everyone who came, or there really is a “common tongue” that they’re speaking. -- source link
