Sarah Lipska (Polish, 1882-1973), textile piece, 1920-29Lipska is an enigmatic figure, who is known to have worked with Leon Bakst as a set and costume designer for the Ballets Russes, and later in the 1920s as a fashion designer in Paris and finally as a sculptor. Extant examples of her work are rare. A quintessential Art Deco textile, this stunning piece of embroidery and beadwork exhibits the highest level of skill. The iconic Art Deco floral pattern found on many forms of decorative arts objects during that period, including on many of Paul Poiret’s designs, are strikingly set against a vibrant coral ground.
