Selected works. Liu Ye (劉野). Oil on canvas. 2002. “ Seeking beauty is the last chance for human beings. It is like shooting at the goal; it arouses an emotion that is wild with joy.”Liu Ye is a contemporary Chinese painter born and based in Beijing. He was part of the generation of artists who grew up during the Cultural Revolution; however, contrary to acclaimed Chinese contemporary art, his work has little political meaning and threat against the Communist Regime. Liu Ye’s paintings are renowned for their bright, comfortable hues of childlike female figures and Miffy the bunny (his favourite cartoon and a reflection of himself) and pairings with Piet Mondrian symbols. He has extensively exhibited his works throughout China, United States and Europe. Liu Ye’s father was a children’s book author who worked under Mao Zedong’s Down to the Countryside Movement. His father’s hidden collection of banned picture books, which included Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales, stories by Alexander Pushkin, Anna Karenina, The Water Margin, War and Peace and Journey to the West inspired Liu Ye’s interest in art from a young age. He received his undergraduate degree and MFA at the Berlin University of Arts in 1994. Due to his studies and interest in Western art, his work moves away from Chinese origin and focuses instead on simple universal themes, such as emotions, hope and the pursuit of perfection in beauty, usually depicted by mildly child-like fairytale characters and female figures engaging in simple acts. He also often portrayed in his paintings figures he had interest in, such as Eileen Chang, Ruan Lingyu and the Little Mermaid.
