catilinas:dedraconesilet:handfuloftime:The Terror + the names of the dead#thinking about how for some of the men (most of the men) all we have is their names #(well the muster rolls are more than just names but you know what i mean) #and about how crozier’s adamant insistence on bringing everyone home gets worn down to at least bringing their names and memory home #and then not even that: he has the chance to go back with ross and doesn’t #and no one knows what happened and their loved ones don’t find solace (via @handfuloftime)A while back @catilinas sent me some episode transcripts for “philological purposes” and it occurred to me that I would be interesting to see when the actual word “name” and its derivatives ( to name” etc.) appear across the episodes of the the series (iirc, there was also a discussion about “to name,” vs. “to call” but I can’t recall the details?)Interesting, the first time “name” appears in the series, it’s Ross’s “name,” that’s being discussed – or rather, the strait to which his name will be given (“It has yet to be named, and I thought… Sir James Ross could be honored thusly.”)Episode 2 uses “name” three times, twice by Goodsir when discussing how he can’t remember the name of Eenoolooapik, the Inuk man whom Dr. MacDonald met; and once by Crozier, who says, “Summer is here in name only, Sir John.” Episode 3 has no uses of “name,” and episode 4 has only one, Hickey’s disastrous rhetorical question, “Whose name do you think’s on that witch’s tongue next?” And interesting connection between names / tongues / language / magic / gender / silence. Episode 5 has two instances of “name,” neither immediately revelatory – Fitzjames asks William Wentzall for his name, and later asks Crozier “What in God’s name is happening here?” The only time “name” appears in episode 6 is the one listed above – “These men need names yet.” Episode 7 offers another two “names” – Crozier, foreseeing the mutiny, remarks, “Some of those names are not [sound],” and tragically and horribly, one of Irving’s last lines is “My name is Lieutenant John Irving…” Episode 8 has the highest number of “name”s so far, at four. Three occur, unsurprisingly, during Fitzjames’s cairn speech – twice, his own name; once, about a “a very base matter” that would have blackened the Barrows’ name.” The four time, however, is Tozer’s line, “That’s your name, isn’t it? Edward?” Our English Penelope finally gets with the meta-trend in episode 9, when Lady Jane asks, “Now, which of you good people would like to see your name published among its patrons?” in addition, of course, to Crozier’s “names of our dead” from the imageset above, and, notably, in Blanky’s unforgettable final line, “What in the name of God took you so fucking long?” In episode 10, the only time “name” is used is the forgotten name of David Young, as noted above. It appears thrice, twice from Crozier, once from Goodsir, in a perfect mirror image of the three “names” split between Crozier and Goodsir back in episode 2. So, who gets “name”s in The Terror, now? If we remove all the generic “These men need names yet,” statements, the numbers come down to: (3) [David Young](2) God(2) James Fitzjames(2) [Eenoolooapik](1) Edward [Little](1) The Barrows(1) Lt. John Irving(1) William Wentzall (1) summer(1) Sir James Ross I could go on about the significance of this particular list, but I’ll leave it there for now – it’s an interesting assortment of men, and families, and seasons. And God. (Two Jameses equal a [David Young]? Fitzjames’s “I’ll have a tally later” is an echo of Blanky’s “There will be a tally for it later when things get hard,” so perhaps Blanky’s “What in the name of God took you so fucking long?” is an echo of Fitzjames’s “What in God’s name is happening here?” Thoughts…) opened the “evil philology google doc that makes my laptop make horrible noises” to find all 34 uses of the word “call” (and calls, called etc) because it is! interesting! in relation to Name things! i have ignored all 12 times it is used to mean shout or summon there are 8 times it is used for Things:watch duty (can you call it watch duty if it is done by a dog)david young’s liver (”you wouldn’t call this cirrhotic”)irving’s ‘discretion’ (”call it anything but help, mr hickey_inuktitutnunavut“this thing [crozier] calls truth”victoria, texasthe northwest passage (”his own chilly shortcut to china, he calls it”)12 times (or 14 if you count a Certain Scene which gets Repeated both times…) it is used for people:in episode 1 has “the one called aglooka” / “the one he’s calling aglooka.” v cool for crozier to be introduced with what he is Called rather than what his Name isepisode 2 has goodsir say “you call me doctor, but technically i’m just a surgeon”next is also goodsir in episode 5 with “i wish you’d call me harry” to which macdonald replies “well i might call you doctor. you’re sounding very like one to me just now.” this will become Sad in later episodes when after the death of every other doctor most people do start calling goodsir doctor, post-mutiny hickey pointedly calls him mr goodsir, and Nobody calls him harry :( also in ep5 is “the old lad […] the doxies used to call ‘six-pounder’” AND!!! the combo attack of “don’t ever call me francis again. you’ll call me what i’m due to be called.” i do think there is Something going on w the fact that ‘call’ is only used multiple times this close together for a) aglooka and b) this scene, and Both are wrt crozier, and both involve him Not being / not wanting to be Called by his actual name. episode 8 has fitzjames’ name, but also crozier saying “i challenge any biographer to tally up your acts of valour and then call you a fake” and i am now being distracted by searching for the word “tally.” please compare the Two occurences of tallying valour / courage in fitzjames’ speech with hickey’s “those who are quickest to tally your value often do it on your spots alone.” holy shitin episode 10 there is another crozier being Not called things: “mr hickey says i’m not to call you captain anymore.” and then of course “a man called cornelius hickey told me…” (and then if you’re counting the repetition: two more of crozier being called aglooka.) who is called things?(8) crozier / aglooka*(3) goodsir(1) ‘six-pounder’(1) fitzjames(1) the original hickeyfinal thots are that it is interesting to me that there is One (1) overlap between the list of people with Names and the list of people who are Called Things and that overlap is fitzjames. like sure crozier and hickey don’t have names but are called things because they both Do have whole other differently named versions of themselves. fitzjames is both named And called things because as much as his identity is “””deceptive”””, it doesn’t have another secret double-self, it only hides parts of itself. also cool how hickey refers to the original hickey as the “man called cornelius hickey” because a) it’s a repetition of the identity theft. by saying it was what he was Called, “””hickey””” is still denying the original hickey possession of his name. and b) if it’s the og hickey who is Called hickey then e.c. doesn’t actually get Any hashtag interesting name quotes. him being referred to by that name Just Happens and is never commented on. *i considered whether or not to count them together for a Long time. the Calling is wrt aglooka 4 times and crozier 4 times. perfectly balanced………… -- source link
