holyfunnyhistoryherring:[ID: a tweet by laura @laurasherif_ “Things you’ve always wondered about natural hair but were too afraid to ask” two photos, each one of a woman with a big afro “- we wash our hair less because our hair doesn’t get as oily as yours, it takes muchhh longer for our hair to be considered oily because of the texture - yes, most people don’t wash their braids every day like you do your hair because it makes our braids frizzy and it’s not really necessary - most curls activate with water, no special product needed - most braids are accomplished using braiding hair, a synthetic hair for that purpose, it’s not because we’re bald or anything it just makes the style last SMMMM longer and look neater - a weave is accomplished by sewing fake hair onto hair that has been cornrowed, not all extensions are called weaves :) - it’s offensive when you say “it will look better straightened” so pls don’t - “wash day” is difficult because most people with natural hair cannot just shampoo and condition for 5 minutes. Because it’s so thick and more prone to being dry we most times use a deep conditioner which can sit for several hours sometimes - we don’t all have short hair it’s SHRINKAGE, shrinkage is when your hair is curly/kinky and basically compresses towards your scalp and makes your hair look sm shorter. Shrinkage can make waist length hair look shoulder length- we put oil on our hair because the oil our scalp produces, has a harder time actually hitting the strands because of how textured it is- Afro hair is courser which is why it doesn’t “fall” most times - braids can take up to 4+ hours to install - because of the texture some people find it hard to constantly do their hair everyday so they opt for braids/weaves/wigs it didn’t mean we bald- when we say we permed our hair, we aren’t referring to the perm that makes your hair curly, it’s called a relaxer, it chemically straightens your hair - it’s not frizzy that’s just how it is-we wear bonnets and use silk scarves etc so our styles don’t get frizzy and cotton doesn’t snag our hair. - some lay their edges cause it just adds more to certain hair styles it’s not ghetto !! -most people don’t like their hair to be touched or played in without their permission !! And it takes long to get it like that in the first place - natural hair is usually THICK ASF, that’s why it’s so voluminous - do not ask people if they’re wearing a weave Or it’s fake, it puts people in a really awkward position LMAO, like if it’s yes it’s awkward for them and if it’s no it’s uncomfortable for you ” End ID.] -- source link
