Wow, Framing Britney Spears sure was incredible. I’m glad someone was able to put all the pieces together in such a cohesive and compelling way. I already was aware of how nuts her whole situation was, but getting the big picture sure was helpful and telling. And while it is of course about one specific woman and her situation, like any good piece of investigative journalism, it went much deeper than that. There were aspects about it that reminded me of Miss Americana, where Taylor used her own personal experiences to talk about larger issues about celebrity, being a woman in the entertainment industry, and control. By men, society, “the system”, and beyond. Framing Britney Spears did that as well. And honestly, how horrifying. I can’t believe this is still going on, and that there are such intrenched systems in place to keep women down. It’s so amazing and inspiring that there are women who relentlessly fight against seemingly insurmountable odds. I was scandalized by some of the footage of a younger Britney on talk shows and in interviews and the seriously batshit crazy things that people felt they had a right to say to her or ask her. At the very least, I think we have come quite a long ways in a short time, because if someone said some of those things to a young female pop star today, nobody would bat an eye if she told them to just fuck off. Perhaps the most intense parts of the documentary for me, however, was the footage of her interactions with the paparazzi. Absolutely fucking terrifying. NOBODY should have to deal with that. People sometimes argue that it’s the price paid for being famous. No. That’s fucking nuts. It’s inhuman, and gross, and quite obviously completely ruins lives. I’ve always shied away from posting photos on my blogs that are clearly paparazzi pics, because it always felt iffy and gross to me, but wow seeing that footage brought it to a whole other level for me. I’m going to try very hard to make sure I never promote those kinds of images ever again. If we don’t express any interest in consuming that kind of media, they will stop making it. Because she is strong, inspiring, sexy and iconic, my girl crush today is Britney Spears. #FreeBritney -- source link
