We are so excited for May’s Target First Saturday as use our special exhibition Disguise: Masks and Global Africa. This exhibition has inspired us to explore the ways we reference the cultural legacies given to us by our predecessors while at the same time reinventing ourselves, rediscovering our pasts, and imagining new possibilities for our future. This exhibition and the dynamic lineup of artists, writers, and creators we have assembled for this unmissable First Saturday will help us think through the complex and multiple identities that reside within us waiting to be revealed. The young artists of Ifetayo Youth Ensemble reimagine cultural traditions through a dance and drumming performance on our Front Lawn. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear from curator Kevin Dumouchelle about how we’ve Brooklyn-ized the exhibition for our museum and learn about the intersection power, class, and gender in masquerade traditions. You can also see exclusive activations and performances of works in the show by Brendan Fernandes and Saya Woolfalk. Early in the night AFRICA'SOUT!, a cultural and activist organization founded by Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu, will present short films about gender fluidity in our past and present, which is followed up by a screening of Paris is Burning and a vibrant Vogue Ball in our Beaux Arts Court. Catch Jojo Abot in Connecting Cultures as she mixes Afrobeat, jazz, and electronica then go jam with Brooklyn’s own DJ Tunez in the Sculpture Garden. Last but not least join authors Nnedi Okorafor and N.K. Jemisin for an extraordinary book club with audio and visuals by performing arts collective Bklyn Zulu accompanying readings of speculative fiction.Posted by Claire Kissinger and Omololu BabatundePhoto by Sarah Waiswa -- source link
