mishacolins:It was a globe with a thousand facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon!so, like, dwarrow: not really known for their flowery or figurative language. so when they called it the ‘Heart of the Mountain’, what if they were being totally literal. and dwarrow, being carven out of stone by Mahal (Aulë), have a connection to the living rock. Gimli, in the Glittering Caves under Helm’s Deep, spoke eloquently on the subject of how such a thing could be. and so, living in the mountain, the dwarrow were surrounded by its life every day. carried like babes in a womb, they heard the mountain’s voice and heartbeat, until the day they took the heart of the mountain. now, even though mountains have a lifespan longer than Men or Dwarrow or even Elves, Erebor started to die that day. and the dying of such a long lived being takes a long time. so the mountain became sick, and that sickness touched the mind of the king, a direct descendant of Durin himself and thus, presumably, closer to the stone. the sickness took hold of the whole mountain, leaving it vulnerable to Smaug’s attack. so yeah: dying mountain, gold sickness, dragon. they’re all connected. i think. -- source link
