imtoolazytothinkofanamesblog:counterpunches:bidonica:Today’s installment of why“but it has always been like this!” is a bullshit argument: @nitratediva lays down the law about the role of women in early Hollywood#um yeah#when filmmaking began#it was mostly women poc and like former circus people#basically it was people without a lot of power or privilege#because movie sets were thought to be a place for poor and unimportant people#and then white business men realized there was money to be made#and they created the studio system so that they could control the means of creation pretty directly#and push everyone who wasn’t “proper” out#this wasn’t an accidentAlso, women served in the wars too. They’ve played a role in almost every war, even if many history classes see that as a side note. Speaking about WWI specifically, most of them weren’t soldiers because men wouldn’t allow women to enlist. However, quite a lot of wounded soldiers would have died if there hadn’t been nurses to care for them. There were women who served as switchboard operators, women who served as spies, etc. And despite their sacrifice, they still didn’t gain the vote until 1920. Even then it was only white women. -- source link
