goodstuffhappenedtoday:From submitter Acacia:So I´m currently in the middle of backpacking my way around South America, 3 months in to a hopefully year+ trip. On Tuesday, when I was at the bus station waiting to take the overnight bus from Cusco to Puno and then onward to Bolivia, my small backpack with literally everything of value in it was snatched while my back was turned for 2 seconds. My thinking had been to keep everything important on the bus with me where I could keep an eye on it, so the thief got a serious haul: Computer, cell phone, camera, ereader, jacket, sweater, passport, and most painfully, a journal that had been with me for over 4 years, through several backpacking trips and major life changes. I am not ashamed to say I did some serious sobbing that night when I got back to the hostel after several hours at the police station. The next morning, I found this note under my door with 300 soles ($110) inside. Viet had already left to fly home, and I have no contact details for him. This whole experience has been a revelation in how wonderful the world is, and full of kind people. From Noah coming to the police station with me until 1am, Richard spending the whole day cheering me up and feeding me chocolate when I cried, the crew at La Boheme hostel giving me a home to recuperate, all of my friends well wishes and photo donations from around the world, and the rest of my Cusco family giving me company and commiserations (and new warm clothes!), this week has been full of kindnesses both large and small. I am so grateful for the people I have in my life, and it´s been an amazing reminder that for every 1 cruel or awful person, there are hundreds who are amazing, kind, and thoughtful.I haven´t been able to track down Viet yet to say thank you or pay him back, but I fully intend to pay forward his kindness and I hope the universe rewards him with the amazing karma he deserves. -- source link
