Bird banding begins for the spring! For 6 ‘seasons’- spring and fall- I have helped out at a migratory bird banding station run by one of my professors. Its one of my favorite things I became involved in while in college. I get to arise at 5:30 in the morning, set up mist nets before dawn, try and stay warm, then go out every few minutes to ‘run the nets’, and see what we get! Where I am, migration is juuust starting- so we still have many ‘winter’ birds- like juncos and kinglets- as well as our residents, like cardinals, chickadees, and titmice.Bird banding is a different sort of birding- where the birds are right in your hands! All bird banders have to be licensed, and we are only allowed to have wild birds in our possession long enough to put a band on them and take some measurements and maybe a photo, then we let them go. A lot of effort is made to make sure the birds are not harmed. Some neat birds from today:Brown ThrasherSwamp SparrowGolden-crowned Kinglet -- source link
