circularthings:The Ebstorf Mappamundi, a map of the 13th Century Christian World. Its name comes from the fact that it was preserved in a Benedictine monastery in Ebstorf, near Illzen on the Lüneburg Heath, until its discovery in 1830.The T-O structure of the map puts Christ at the top, the bottom of the T in the Mediterranean, the cross at Jerusalem, and the O as the surrounding oceans. Following the Roman tradition of placing landmarks in relative positions, the map maintains basic order and structure but is not cartographically accurate. However, it is a beautiful example of information visualisation that is both a sacred object and a map of the wonderful backdrops of mediaeval storytelling.More: visualmotive, henry-davis.com cache -- source link
