reginaabyssi:runakvaed-deactivated20210131:“The Force runs strong in my family.”#i know amoral aristocratic families are my faves #but scary powerful family dynasties of sassy anti-authoritarian anti-heroes are a close second #star wars #skywalkers and their tightrope walk between being messiahs and destroyers are one of my favourite narrative tropes I get that sometimes people might get annoyed that I do so much Star Wars. That’s fine. But I sometimes look at caps like these and I want to cry because this, this just utterly encapsulates the whole series. Every movie and the TV shows up to this point give us these magnificent parallels.I know that some people still say that the OT are the only good movies. But the point of the PT is to hold a mirror up both to the OT and to within itself (something not done quite as much within the OT; the internal mirror is there but not so extensively). To show a beyond the few worlds we encounter in the OT, extended through a Galaxy Far Far Away, a Long Long Time Ago.And then to shrink it down. To take the galaxy entire in all its beauty, and shrink it down to the choices and actions of one family. It’s the very definition of a Saga, telling the story of how the actions of a few or one can shape things around them across years - or across worlds, reaching out beyond the single family.I personally like to compare Star Wars to the Forsythe Saga, wherein the selfish actions of one in particular, combined with the choices of those around that character, combine to inwardly destroy families. It simply doesn’t have the worldsbreaking aspects to it.Perhaps most interestingly, Star Wars picks up the world building most of all through the background characters. Some people might hate what the Special Editions do to places like Bespin or Mos Eisley, but it merely adds to the worlds. This is a huge galaxy with a story for every single background character. It’s pure chance that we’re telling the story of the Skywalker-Amidala family through the eyes (sensors) of R2-D2 and C-3PO, rather than Hermione the waitress in Dex’s Diner. It’s a shockingly efficient use of show don’t tell and I don’t think it’s appreciated enough. But I’ll talk more about that later because mostly I’m just clawing my face off over these screencaps right now so bbl. -- source link
