radicalrebelcat:radicalrebelcat:I saw this post by @moonstarturtle about Lasat skulls, and it got me thinking about other humanoid skull structure in the Star Wars verse. So I sketched out of some of my favorite species! Thanks for the inspiration @moonstarturtle! #togruta looks kind of wierd #I think it’s the front lekku that’s messing with me since twi lek lekku don’t have that My reasoning for that design is that Twi’lek lekku are boneless structures, made of nerves, muscle, fat and sinew. A Twi’lek’s brain is partly housed in the base of the lekku, not just in the crainum and they are known to be very sensitive. Both appendages can be moved independently and Twi’lek communication often uses a mixture of both lekku sign language and speech.Torgruta Montrals are probably made of something like keratin. They form hollow cone like appendages, which house a complex and sensitive nervous system which the allows the Torgruta to sense vibrations through echo location, instead of having ears. Vibration travels through the conical shape into the sensory nerve center to be process by the brain. I expect a cartilage like layer grows over the inner cones in different layers of thickness, in order to protect and stabilize the inner cones, it would also allow the Torgruta to pinpoint singular sounds and echos. This would also explain why and how the Headtails formed the stripes and coloration the Togruta became known for in addition to camouflage. I imagine the lower Montreal tails are probably built of excess cartilage, which continues to grow in thickness and length with age. At a certain point the inner cone structure ceases to grow, but the outer Cartilage continues building on itself; which is why baby Torgrutra have short firm Montrals and older ones have long pliable Headtails. With that reasoning in mind, I figured the core shell of a Torgruta’s Montrals would last alongside the skeleton, much like a rams skull. While both species have headtails, the two are anatomically different because they evolved for different purposes. And I didn’t over think this at all… I think I may be in love with alien biology.
