scotch-and-roses:I know this is a joke and I know that sometimes it’s true, but no one looks up a complex physics equation and says that it’s bad mathing because they can’t follow it.And yet people assume that they should be able to understand a paper right away for another discipline - why? The humanities and social sciences also take years to master. You’re surprised that their papers take multiple re-reads to understand? They’re disciplines of their own. Of course they have their own jargon and their own versions of complex equations. It’s just that those equations happen to be made of words and not numbers.Being able to read does not mean you should be able to understand everything you read. And when you don’t understand something you read, that doesn’t mean it’s bad writing. -- source link
