Stop the presses yet again! There are child newts in our pond, probably palmate newts since that’s the species of the adults we’ve seen. Behold his frilly gills, boogly fish eyes, and pointy little nozzle. The giant reflected fingers provide an ominous backdrop and a rough sense of scale. The newtlets are so tiny. He’s resting on a piece of hessian lining the pond edge, so that grid directly in front of him is the weave of coarse cloth.I did not expect to see these guys at all this year, plus it seems kind of late for them to be just showing up. However, my reading indicates that they can overwinter in the pond as tadpoles, so I think they’ll be OK regardless. -- source link
