life update: the night I decided I was going to marry samantha we were in bed talking about our concepts of relationship commitment. we’re gay, we’re poly, we’re raising children with some other people, it’s a weirder and messier thing for us than for most people. and I said that there were a lot of commitments I wasn’t sure about, wasn’t ready to make, but that I felt prepared to promise to care, forever, about the other person’s thriving and flourishing and growing into themselves, and to do everything in my power to help them get thereand sam said that she loved me very much but was pretty sure that our wedding vows should not be a promise that both of us would make - that both of us have made - towards every single person who has ever lived or ever willthat they should probably be more specific than thatand they should be, and they will be, but it’s important, I think, that we started out with that. marriage is at its best a specific application of the general principle that people are good and happiness is good and love is good and that our deliberate efforts can build a better world for us and build us into people more equipped to improve upon, and to rejoice in, our world. -- source link
