Egyptian Building, Medical College of Virginia (MCV, now Part of Virginia Commonwealth University),
Egyptian Building, Medical College of Virginia (MCV, now Part of Virginia Commonwealth University), 2014.Built in 1845 when MCV was part of Hampden-Sydney College, from which it split and became a state supported medical school in 1860, the building is one of the oldest medical school structures still in active use. In 1968 MCV was merged with Richmond Professional Institute to form Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).The building is considered to be one of the finest Egyptian-Revival style buildings, and it is almost a unique exemplar of that style in the Mid-Atlantic region. Originally it had all of the functions of a medical school building including dissection and operating rooms. Through its history the interior has been substantially altered and now it is mostly an auditorium. When my wife was a MD student at MCV, that auditorium was used for ceremonial occasions, lectures, convocations and the Senior Follies. -- source link
