In 1907, the Carthaginian sanctuary in the Es Cuieram cave was “re-discovered” in Ibiza—it was already well known to locals. The shrine honored the Carthaginian goddess, Tanit. The cave was full of various artifacts, most notably the terracotta statues of Tanit shown above.People have been bringing offerings of everything from coins and candles to liquor and plastic trinkets to the shrines least since the 1970′s (I would bet it had been going on for quite a while longer than that).
