gin-and-derision:pocinmusichistory:Syrian Refugees Get Together in Germany to Found a Full Blown Symphony OrchestraA group of Syrian professional musicians have found themselves amongst the chaos and have announced their first concert for Tuesday the 22nd of September under the name of the Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra in the German city of Bremen. Bassist Raed Jazbeh explains:“We want to show people a different picture of Syria, beyond war and ISIS. Syria is a land of music and culture.”Jazbeh, who now lives in Bremen, launched the orchestra into existence; through Facebook he met other musicians who had fled from Syria and more than 30 of them will be traveling to their premiere in Bremen. In the future, the ensemble plans to grow to 50 Syrian musicians, but until they find a refugee for each instrument, they are welcoming German musicians to take a seat.Like most professional Syrian musicians Jazbeh studied music in Damascus, home to the only conservatory of its kind in the country. “This is usually all musicians know,” says Jazbeh. Many members of the expat Philharmonic have therefore previously played with each other. This coming Saturday, the orchestra will play in a full ensemble for the first time. Because of the short time of preparation for this concert, only three pieces have been rehearsed but the repertoire is planned to grow. Music genres will include classical music and jazz, but also traditional Syrian music. More concerts are planned with the next one being on October 3rd in Lüneburg“We will do our best,” said Jazbeh. And we at KVART & BØLGE wish them all the best and bow our heads for creating harmony in times of incredible hardship and turmoil.
