archaicwonder:Richborough Roman Fort, KentRichborough is perhaps the most symbolically important of all Roman sites in Britain, witnessing both the beginning and almost the end of Roman rule there. The fort was founded by Romans under the name Rutupiæ when they landed there in AD 43. It was a major port of Roman Britain and was a starting point for the Roman road (Watling Street) which ran to Canterbury and London. The fortifications on the site were later converted into a Saxon shore fort around 277 AD. These “Saxon” shore forts were built by Romans along the Channel to guard against Saxon pirates. During the decline of the Roman Empire, Richborough was eventually abandoned by the Romans and eventually occupied by a Saxon religious settlement. -- source link
