indigozeal:An article from the November 1989 issue of Beep! Megadrive on the development of Phantasy Star III (which was ultimately released in Japan in April 1990). The article gives an overview of the systems planned for the game, such as the game’s multi-generational format and how the music changes in battle according to the computer’s perception of your performance. Of interest, though, is mention of a third, unused “Confidence” system:The party is planned to have a maximum of five members. However, two of those five members will not accept commands in battle. The actions they will take instead depend on their “Confidence” (temporary name) in the hero. If the character’s Confidence in the hero is high, then the character will take actions that are beneficial for the player. If on the other hand, the character’s Confidence in the hero is low, then the character will take actions that will prove aggravating for the player. Incidentally, the Confidence concept acts like the EP in Moon Dancer [an ultimately-cancelled but then-hyped RPG for the Mega Drive], so Moon Dancer can’t be overlooked, either. Also, the method by which Confidence can be increased differs for each character, as do the actions each character will take in response. We imagine, though, that treating characters with affection is a sure path to a good relationship with them.Scans courtesy of segaretro.org. -- source link
