trans-parenting:(Photo: Aaron Lavinsky for the Star Tribune)The trial of officer Derek Chauvin begins in Minneapolis today. In a rarity for our state, the judge has allowed it to be televised. As the world watches, please hold the Twin Cities and especially our BIPOC communities in your thoughts.(As an aside: Minnesota Public Radio has put together a podcast, In Front of Our Eyes, that is worth digging into to get more context around the trial). This trial may provide a view of accountability (or lack thereof) around violent policing, and I hope that it can give some closure for George Floyd’s family and our communities. But we know all too well that trials far too often fail to provide meaningful justice; and that the broader work of healing and change is critical for shaping a better future. Don’t let the spectacle overshadow the urgency of what needs to be done. The racial divides and inequities of our state were apparent long before last summer, and the work to solve them is all of ours to own. I know I will be looking to community leaders to stay engaged in the weeks and months ahead.Black lives matter. -- source link
