sporkqueen:As a Midwesterner who just endured a full week of -25°F weather, I have nothing to say to you besides “LOL”As a Midwesterner who just endured a full week of -25°F weather, shut the fuck up. We’re more equipped for this kind of weather and have more experience with it than Texans. If you’re in the south right now and experiencing this kind of extreme cold for the first time:Make sure you have water on hand somewhere. Bottles, gallons, or even some spare buckets, in case pipes freeze. If you have access to your main water valve, shut it off overnight.Letting faucets drip also prevents freezing.Covering your windows completely with a sheet of plastic, like plastic wrap, will help keep some of the cold out and keep them from freezing on the inside. If you need a quicker fix, put newspapers between the inside and outside windows, if you have those. If you drive anywhere, dress for the weather outside. If you do end up stuck in your car, you’ll want to be prepared.Keep a charger in your car in case you need to charge your phone and you don’t have power. If the heat gets shut off, move your whole household to one room. Make sure you have all your essentials there. Block windows, doors, or any other drafts with towels, layer clothes, and build a fire if you have a fireplace. You’ll want to have at least ½ a tank of gas in your car.Camp stoves aren’t safe to use inside; opt for nonperishable foods until the power comes back.Put chunky salt, fine gravel, or sand on icy roads and sidewalks.Mittens keep you warmer than gloves do.Don’t heat your home with a gas stove! You can use a broom to dust snow off your car, and a spatula to scrape off ice.If you’re able to get to a store, buy lots of blankets, batteries, flashlights, non perishable food, and wood if you have a fireplace. For Texas specifically, here is a mutual aid list if you need money or resources. -- source link
