In Memoriam a las Victimas de la Fiebre Amarilla 1871, San Telmo, Buenos Aires, 2007.Buenos Aires was a not infrequent victim of yellow fever and malaria, and the low lying site of the San Telmo barrio close to the marshy edges of the rio de la Plata made it especially vulnerable. After the yellow fever epidemic of 1871, the richer inhabitants decamped for Recoletos and Palermo, higher and further from the river, leaving San Telmo to poorer people, especially recent immigrants from Italy and Iberia. -- source link
