I Have to Buy New Shoes Thursday, July 18, 6:30 PM (115 min.) Having been dragged to Paris by his younger sister, Suzume, photographer Sen Yagami finds himself 10,000 kilometers away from home and deserted along the bank of the Seine. As so often seems the case in this magical city, however, Sen finds his journey take a turn for the romantic when the beautiful Aoi Teshigahara literally stumbles into his life. The next three days become the focus of this light treat of a film, as Sen and Aoi explore the city, their delicate relationship slowly developing like a dewy web tenuously holding them together. While this premise will doubtless bring to mind the itinerant protagonists of filmmakers like Jarmusch or Linklater, director Eriko Kitagawa’s newest film stands firmly on its own, its heart-aching elegance contrasting with the bare and honest performances of its leads.
