The reason he cried at the end of his free skate was not because he knew he won the gold, in fact it was quite the opposite - he thought he failed Yuri and Viktor.Why, you ask? He fell while doing a jump, it wasn’t a flawless performance. Viktor asked him to stop Yuri from retiring, and Yurio knew the only way he could do that would be to grab gold. But don’t you see? He thought he lost to Yuri. And you know what else? He wasn’t even crying because he thought he’d be second place. He was crying because it would mean that Yuri would now retire. He did a disservice to himself and let Viktor and himself down. That’s why he was crying. He thought he failed. He was skating not to win gold but to make sure that Yuri didn’t win gold.
