As silly as it seems, Lindsay and I first became familiar with the Fontana di Trevi because of a Disney television show we used to watch as kids. You may or may not have heard of a show called Lizzie Mcguire about a girl trying to survive middle school. The show reached a level of success where Disney produced the “Lizzie Mcguire Movie,” which, as I later found out, reached much farther than U.S. audiences. In the film, The main character(Lizzie) goes on a class trip to Rome, Italy, where, in a key scene in the film, she tosses a coin into the Fontana Di Trevi. We were both around nine years old when the movie was released, and we often joked about how thrilled we were to see what we called the “Lizzie Mcguire Fountain,” as the picture was still clear in our minds. As we approached the fountain based on nearby signs and map navigation, we joyfully sang the finale song for the film, “This is What Dreams are Made Of.” Despite this being the first time for us to stand in front of this fountain, nostalgia powerfully connected our reality to the fountain we had seen so many times before. After taking a few photos in our sporty, new jackets, we searched through our bags for a coin to throw into the fountain. …………………………..We then looked nearby for a place to enjoy dinner. The rain began again, and we settled for a nearby restaurant after agreeing the prices appeared reasonable. We began by sharing a bowl of their pasta fagioli, a brothy, bean soup. I tried the house special, the lasagna. Which was unlike any lasagna I’d had before. It was layered with thick, fresh pasta and tomato sauce, and what seemed like a sharp cheddar. I was surprised, but not dissapointed, to see the absence of ricotta cheese, which I’m used to from my mother’s cooking. After we finished our last dinner in Rome, I ordered a tiramisu to go for the two of us to share, as I didn’t think one serving was adequate for our trip -especially when I knew how excellent it would be. As we were quite filled by this time, we planned to have the dessert later that night. Afterwards, we headed back to our accommodation to pack up our things to prepare for an early morning. Wednesday, April 16th. Due to an early bus, we caught a 4am taxi, as we quickly grabbed our remaining food out of the fridge and headed downstairs. We loaded up the taxi, and the driver didn’t seem to mind as we brought our food into the back seat. The streets were highly deserted, and this caused the taxi driver to keep a highly consistent pace of driving much faster than we anticipated. As we raced down the streets towards the airport, we passed the tiramisu back and forth with a white plastic fork. I remember feeling highly amused as I noted, as we shared fresh tiramisu in the back of a highly mobile Italian taxi, how this would be one of those unpredictable moments I’d always remember. -- source link
