yellowhoriental: 金陵十三釵 (The Flowers of War) | 2011 A 2011 Chinese historical war drama written and directed by China’s most renowned and prestigious film director and producer 張藝謀 (Zhang Yimou), starring English actor Christian Bale and a handful of China’s most beautiful and new actresses; 倪妮 (Ni Ni, co-star with Christian Bale), Zhang Xinyi, Han Xiting, and Doudou Zhang are some of the Chinese women Bale closely worked with. The story is set in Nanking, China, during the 1937 Rape of Nanking in the Second Sino-Japanese war. Two groups of Chinese women, first are the most beautiful and famous prostitutes of Shanghai, known as the 海上花 ‘flowers of Shanghai’, second are young Chinese school girls, seek the refuge and protection of a Westerner from the invading Japanese army, knowing well that the Japanese will not dare touch a Westerner. The Chinese women are saved by the American hero (John Miller; Christian Bale) and they stay inside together in the protective walls of the Western-run Roman Catholic cathedral. Romance and intimacy develops between the White man and the Chinese woman as they learn more about each other. In return for their safety, the Chinese woman (played by Ni Ni), offers John Miller not only to sleep with him for the rest of her life, but suggest that all the Chinese women (the prostitutes) he rescued will eagerly please him beyond his most wild imaginations. -- source link
