Portico, State Capitol, Richmond, 2014.Tomorrow on Martin Luther King Day this building is expected to be at the center of a demonstration by gun fanatics and others on the extreme fringes of the radical right. The state assembly which is meeting in the capitol is on the cusp of passing a set of exceptionally weak (but better than nothing) gun control measures including limiting purchases to only one handgun a day, requiring background checks, etc. Some of those planning the demonstration have stated an explicit desire to initiate a civil war rather than merely to lobby for “gun rights.” The passage of the feeble gun control measures is all but certain. The evolution of the demonstration into violence remains a serious threat to public safety on the capitol grounds and nearby in Richmond. One must hope the demonstration does not devolve into a situation like that in Charlottesville a couple of years ago.  -- source link
