siryouarebeingmocked:sindri42:darkvioletcloud:incognito-princess:marsupials-of-mars:mindboogling:I don’t really know how to describe this feeling other than stressful, so I decided to draw itPlease let me draw and “sketchnote”Ugh I know it“If you’re drawing you’re not listening.” Absolutely untrue!! It’s ‘optimum arousal’. It’s why people can sing along to the radio while their driving to work and not worry about missing turns, but they need to turn down the music to navigate to a brand new address. Driving to work has become muscle memory and you actual need an outside stimuli to keep you’re brain paying attention. You need more brain power to navigate something new, so the music is now a distraction.Same thing with people who listen better while doodling. If you’re an auditory learner you need something to occupy your vision and kinestics to optimally listen to what you’re supposed to learn. Auditory learners listen better when doodle- fact! (fyi- I’ve been a teacher for 16 years. I know what I’m talking about.)My social worker had to essentially tell my parents “Yeah tell DVC’s teachers that he should be allowed to doodle in class. He’s paying attention. He just needs his hands occupied.”That’s why I read faster and retain what I read better if I listen to music at the same time. Nothing with lyrics (at least not in a language I know; foreign languages are okay because they basically become another instrument), and ideally with the complexity of the sound inversely proportional to the complexity of the writing. I need something to occupy the rest of my mind or else it will be casting about for something else to do, and dragging the part that’s actually being productive along with.I also do sudoku puzzles while watching tv, if the audio is a language I know. Or if the subtitles come slowly enough. Because otherwise if I’m on my own I keep tabbing away to read something, or if I’m with a group I keep looking around the room all twitchy-like or getting up to pace. This explains why I like to have a video or music playing in the BG as I draw or write. Even if the video is just neapolitan noise. It’s also why websites like rpgamers are so useful for when you want to concentrate. A whole lot of low tech soundtracks, usually without lyrics, meaning you can keep your mind happy while concentrating on the drawing or writingGaming and Game Music News, Lyrics & Online Radio - RPGamers Network -- source link
