scatter-of-light:thorinkingoferebor:Do not speak to me as if I were some lowly dwarf lord… as if I were still Thorin Oakenshield#welcome to thorins world of self-doubt and perceived failure and betrayal #seriously i don’t think the movies get enough credit for the incredible depth they’ve given to the character of thorin #all those tiny bits and pieces in auj and dos culminating in his long coming mental unravelling in botfa #but the ‘as if i were still thorin… oakenshield’ line is so important to me! #yes he saved his people and led them to safety but in their hearts they’re still homeless #yes he built them a new life in ered luin but it’s so far beneath what they would have had in erebor #he lead the dwarven armies in front of moria to victory and gained the name oakenshield but at what cost #only to find that azog has survived and thorin has failed to avenge his family #just as he has failed reclaiming the mountain as his grandfather had so desperately wanted #and no matter how often balin or dwalin or dis tell him that he doesn’t need to #that he has done enough thorin cannot see it that way cannot see what he has achieved only what he failed to accomplish #and on top of only a few dwarves willing to follow him he’s faced with constantly being reminded of the weakness of his bloodline #but he cannot go back to being sneered at and frowned upon and treated like nothing more than a common criminal #cannot go back to the lie that is the name the dwarves have given to him #and yet in botfa there are those voices in the back of his head - dwalin’s voice telling him he never needed the crown to be a king #bilbo’s voice telling him thorin oakenshield was more honourable and brave and true than thorin king under the mountain ever was #excuse my rambling but thorin needs some blankets and cuddles until he stops seeing his entire life as one big disappointment to his line -- source link
