russianfolklore:‘Sartak’ by Pavel Ryzhenko. Sartak (left) was a son of Batu Khan and a great-grandson of Genghis Khan, he succeeded Batu as khan of the Golden Horde. According to the notes of many contemporaries (Pope Innocent IV, for example), Sartak professed Christianity (probably, Nestorianism). Alexander Nevsky (right) was Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev and Grand Prince of Vladimir in 13 century. Commonly regarded as a key figure of medieval Rus’, Alexander rose to legendary status on account of his military victories over German and Swedish invaders while agreeing to pay tribute to the powerful Golden Horde. He was canonized as a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547.In 1252, Alexander Nevsky met with Sartak at Sarai. Alexander received Yarlyk (permission) to become Grand Duke of Vladimir in vassalage to the Golden Horde, he became Sartak’s anda (sworn brother, probably akin to blood brother) and an adopted son of Batu Khan. -- source link
