Lindner Revolving Rifle,Made in 1857, this complex and unique rifle was patented by Edward Lindner. A .48 caliber revolving smoothbore, it had an amazing action which gave it twelve shots, this at a time when most people were using single shot muskets. Underneath the hammer was a chamber full of percussion caps. When the hammer was cocked an arm would place a percussion cap on the nipple. Of course cocking the hammer would also revolver the cylinder, but it did something else that is really amazing. Below the barrel was a magazine in which the user would load loose powder and a bullet in succession. Work the hammer would cause a plunger in the tube magazine to push a new load of powder and shot into the empty bottom cylinder. Of course the user would start the process by loading three chambers and keeping the other three empty. While ingenious, the system was complex, and possibly even dangerous as an errant spark could cause all of the powder in the magazine to explode. Also at this time the self-contained metallic cartridge was invented, which would make this gun obsolete. -- source link
