I had the honor of speaking on a panel to entrepreneurial, innovative mothers about ways to expand our creativity in business and in motherhood. What I said that seemed to register most to the crowd, was the idea to stop focusing on the solution, and instead, dissect the problem in detail. It’s often times when you dig deeper into the actual problem, you’ll find that the solution you’ve been so focused on is actually hindering your creativity. Example? A designer has been tasked to design a new pair of pants. But what’s the actual problem? The assignment is that she is designing something to cover one’s legs. When she steps back and realizes that is her task, her solutions are now endless. She is no longer designing pants— maybe it’s a skirt, a curtain, a wall, a shadow… her creative powers are now infinite. This example can be used in many fields.
