collaterlysisters:refinery29:The psychiatrist who wrote the criteria for narcissism just made an extremely important point about what’s wrong with diagnosing Trump with mental disordersDr. Allen Frances says in speculating about Trump’s mental health, we are doing a disservice to those who do suffer from mental illness. In a series of tweets, he explained why he doesn’t think Trump is a narcissist — and how harmful it can be for us to keep assuming that he is.right and wrong. The “distress/impairment” requirement is subjective and highly problematic when it comes to NPD and ASPD. From Trump’s point of view and from a view of social power, he is certainly not impaired; his distress is evident from staffer leaks and I would certainly call him impaired from my point of view. Dr. Frances is right in my view about the lack of value of obsessing over whether Trump is diagnosable, but I disagree that there is no value in calling pathologically narcissistic behavior what it is. It’s just, well, that’s what it is, move on because the problem we face is in fact a fascistic and potentially genocidal regime and a society that allows it.Anyone who sheds crocodile tears about how calling trump a crazy narcissist is “insulting” to ordinary mentally ill people is just off the mark, in my view as a person with a long history of mental illness. I simply don’t agree that there is any confusion as to what sort of crazy trump is and what sort of crazy we, the people who are not the fucking president, are. I don’t expect everyone to see it that way, but it is simply not a unified belief held by all people active in mental illness advocacy that this is a harmful use of language or an important target for activism. -- source link
