Jerome Lester Horwitz was born on October 22, 1903. His full formal Hebrew name was “Yehudah Lev ben Shlomo Natan ha Levi.” He had four brothers, and he and his brothers would land on Adolf Hitler’s death list.He was a true knucklead - but, there was a side of him that very few people knew about. He was a knucklehead with a heart. His two older brothers were named Moe and Shemp. The brothers had a friend named Larry. The Horwitz brothers would change their name to “Howard”, and Jerome’s nickname would become “Curly”. His brothers Moe and Shemp would join their friend Larry to become the comedy group, “The Three Stooges.” After Shemp left the group, Curly would take over his role.In 1940, their short, “You Nazty Spy!” would become the first American production to mock Hitler’s regime, nine months before Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator”. Hitler was supposedly so angered that he placed the Stooges on his own personal death list. This was during a time when the United States was still neutral and the public held predominantly isolationist views.Curly Howard was the most outrageous member of the Three Stooges. He was wild, he was “Soitenly!” zany, and he was one of the funniest comedians of all time, but he also had a soft side.He wasn’t always a wise guy, eh. He was also a sensitive fella. Some close to him called him an introvert away from the camera. And, he loved dogs. One of his routines even included him barking “Ruff, Ruff”.He loved dogs so much so that whenever he found a homeless or abandoned dog while the Stooges were traveling, he would rescue the dog. He just could not bear to leave the dog alone in the world. He would take the dog with him, he would care for it, and he would search for a home for it.As the Stooges toured, he would take the dog from town to town, until he could find a good home for the dog. And, when he was able to find a good, loving home for one, he would find the next homeless dog and do the same.Yes, Curly was indeed a knucklehead. But, he was also a nice guy, with a kind heart. And, although Hitler hated him and his brothers, pups loved him.Indubitably.The Jon S. Randal Peace Page -- source link
