hellotailor:morgan-leigh:heyheyrenay:Hugo Award Recommendations: Best Fan Writer — Hello, TailorGav is eligible in the Best Fan Writer category for her 2013 writing at Hello, Tailor.Gav is the critic who made me care about the use of clothes in TV/film, and is also intensely hilarious (comedy level: WHEEZING LAUGHTER). She has a really distinctive perspective about costume design and characterization. I pretty much only understand how suits are supposed to fit and the characterization choices around why someone might want a suit to fit incorrectly because of her work. Since I started following her she’s expanded and does TV recaps, genre movie critiques, as well as tons of commentary about SF media. All her work is definitely worth a read.Need a place to start? PLEASE INVESTIGATE FORTHWITH.OMG, I’ve been nominated for a Hugo Award!! A HUGO AWARD!! Thank you so much, oh my gosh. This is like, the most flattering and amazing thing ever. ;___;Re: “How this works” — I’m told that you typically need about 40-50 nominations (?) to get on the shortlist in the Fan Writer category. BUT, only members of the World Science Fiction Society can submit Hugo nomination ballots! “Members” = anyone who has paid to attend the World Science Fiction Convention in 2013, 2014, or 2015, or has a “supporting” membership (which costs $25/$40). This year, the Convention will be in London, BTW! So if any of you guys are members or attendees, please consider my blog for one of your nominations! :)My masterpost isn’t completely up to date, but basically I write a lot of sci-fi/genre TV and movie criticism, often on the topic of costume design in sci-fi and superhero movies. Realistically speaking, my odds of being shortlisted look kinda slim: I checked the list of previous shortlisted Fan Writers and, well… most contenders were either traditional fanzine writers, or professional authors who also blog about SF/F fiction. For example, one author/fanzine editor has been shortlisted in the Fan Writer category 31 years in a row, and has won 28 Hugo Awards total, including a couple for his original sci-fi writing. Daunting!I originally wasn’t gonna reblog this post, because it already feels painfully, embarrassingly arrogant even to point out that I’m eligible for a nomination. But then I remembered a handful of articles I saw recently, about this very topic: failing to put yourself forward during awards season. In the field of sci-fi/geek-culture writing, one of the reasons why so few women get nominated/shortlisted for stuff… is because we just don’t ask for it. So, this post is me saying: my blog is eligible to be nominated for a Hugo, and it would be cool if you could consider me on your ballot!HELLOTAILOR IS A WONDERFULLY FRIENDLY AND GENIUS HUMAN AND YOU SHOULD PROBABLY SUPPORT HER IF IT IS FEASIBLE FOR YOU. -- source link
