The National Mall Looking Toward the U.S. Capitol Building, Washington, DC, 1969.Probably the first picture I ever took of the National Mall, a subject of numerous shots when I moved to the Washington area a year and a half later. A while later it was a scene I saw frequently walking from my house on Capitol Hill to Foggy Bottom where I worked. The scene today looks rather different, though the Mall itself is still green and lined with trees. There are walking paths, and on the left a current photo would include the East Building of the National Gallery of Art while to the right it would show the National Museum of the American Indian and the Air and Space Museum. I came to the shocking realization a few months ago that later this year marks 50 years of my close association with the Washington, DC area. In the interim I have spent considerable time away and lived several places elsewhere (London, Richmond, LA, Seattle), but for better or worse the DC area has been my most common area of residence. -- source link
