flybaldies:greatrunner:wocinsolidarity:shmurdapunk:the-goddamazon:extraextraex:pretty tired of seeing this hair trope on asian charactersEDIT: because three examples wasn’t enough for some of you:OH WOW.Why is this a thing? As soon as I saw this post I thought about Mei Melancon as Psylocke in X-men: The Last Standbut really. why is this even a trope?anyone know the origin of this?#i’m not asian#but my guess is that it’s a modern extension of the ‘sexy cold badass dragon lady’ trope combined with colorism#because dark hair isn’t acceptable as it is #asian women #tropes #representation#i’d be interested in any of my asian followers’ takes on this (tags: wingsandtails)it’s less about acceptablility than about the idea that all asian people look the same imo. black hair apparently just isn’t very ‘exciting’, especially when you pair it with an e. asian woman’s face.it also has to do with how rarely the women have a significant number of lines to make them stand out from the rest of the cast/any other e. asian side characters, so since the creators can’t be assed to give them much of a personality (lbr half the time— and i love mako mori— but half the time ‘quiet’ or ‘quirky’ and oftentimes both are a big component of their personalities)and correct me if i’m wrong on this but this is also sometimes used to set japanese characters apart from chinese characters/other e. asians, by giving them a splash of color to make them more exciting without going though the extra effort of having them demonstrate personality traits (think claudia from the babysitter’s club and how often her hair would be dyed). it’s also almost always a bob of some kind or long + straight.course after a certain point, it’s just a tired-ass racist trope. i really don’t think mako would have blue in her hair, given everything else we know about her personality. who the fuck’s got the time to bleach + dye on the eve of the apocalypse? -- source link
