ancientbeardart:Painting of the god HeronRomano-Egyptianca. 300 CE“This votive panel of the god Heron is one of a handful of paintings from antiquity to survive with its original frame. Although the worship of Heron likely originated in eastern Europe, he was a popular deity with the Roman army and found easy access into the pantheon of Greco-Roman Egypt as a ‘savior’ god. Here he is depicted in Roman military dress, making an offering at an altar. Behind him is a small figure of the donor or a servant, as well as a griffin holding the Wheel of Nemesis. The goddess of divine retribution, Nemesis was also popular with the army.”RISD MuseumThe Thracian Rider or Horseman is a Hellenistic demigod originally from Thrace and Lower Moesia as early as the 4th century B.C.E. Inscriptions indicate he was known as Heros or Heron, meaning “hero”. His epithets include soter (savior), iatros (healer) and epekoos (hearer of prayers). He was identified with Asclepius, Apollo, Dionysus, and Horus. His Mysteries were associated with Demeter, Persephone, and Hekate, or perhaps Balkan goddesses sharing their characteristics.Sources: http://www.encyclopedia.com/environment/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/thracian-riderhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thracian_horsemanThe Oxford Handbook of Roman Egypt edited by Christina Riggs (Google Books)http://www.trismegistos.org/fayum/fayum2/1284.php?geo_id=1284 -- source link
