Director Kazama: The interaction at Kurosawa’s place was a long scene that was about 6-7 pages in the script. The performance was developed after discussing carefully with both of them about how to portray this scene. Because they had feelings for each other, as Adachi and Kurosawa, we came up with this answer. Before the actual scene, at the stage where we were still confirming the set-up, as Adachi, Asako-kun’s feelings overwhelmed him and he sobbed. But that was a really great performance, so great that following that, Machida-kun also cried. While saying “we can’t do this multiple times”, when I discussed with the staff about how to shoot the scene, we aimed to finish filming with Adachi crying, and it became a shoot which required extremely sensitive operations. The staff and cast matched our breathing, and joined hands to capture this important moment. I think Akaso-kun gave a great performance in the middle of a stage which was suffused with such tension.Akaso-san: Although Kurosawa let out a laugh when he said “should we end it here”, at the time, the depth of his eyes seemed really sad. The shock of Kurosawa, who usually puts Adachi first, being made to say those lines with that expression on his face, also made it painful for me, and my tears spilled over on their own accord. From Anan-mag (the whole thing translated by motivateanger at twitter), comments on episode 11. It’s so great reading about how this scene was made. Like I’ve mentioned before, it was filmed quite early in the process, the same day as their first breakfast in episode 2. Seeing Adachi cry like he did in that scene, my feeling was that “wow, he is REALLY crying, he’s really feeling that sadness”. Seems I wasn’t wrong. And I was extremely impressed with both actors’ performance in that moment. This, I believe, is why Cherry Magic is such a success, in terms of quality; because obviously, Machida-san and Akaso-san could play off each other in a way which I think doesn’t happen often. They both seemed to have connected to, and understood their characters in a very deep way, and could play it out so that the other could respond in a very real and sincere way. I think that’s why it resonates so well with the audience; we see it, we believe it, we feel it. Of course, it also leads to some confusion in our brains, since it’s hard to not transfer that onto the actors own feelings… Confusion all around. Hehe. Also Machida-san has been awarded the Television academy awards for best supporting actor too! And Cherry Magic best drama. Akaso-san, sadly, didn’t win. But Machida-san spends most of his thanks for the award talking about Akaso-san, so yeah… It was a collaborative effort, that’s for sure! Two such wonderful, talented and humble men. So yay! They deserve all the awards!February 2021 is Cherry Magic-month, I believe. -- source link
