Two letters from Field Marshal Sir John French about the shellshortage (24th & 27th September 1915).Both letters are addressed to Viscount Walter Long, the President of theLocal Government Board in Henry Asquith’s government. The first (twopages long) was written on the eve of the Battle of Loos, complainingabout the shortage of shells (a large supply was needed for successin the forthcoming battle) and asking Long to use his influence toimprove matters.The second letter (four pages long) was written during the battle,reporting that “daily supplies of ammunition are still mostinadequate” even though “I have sent wire after wire to the W.O.”and again asking Long to help. -- source link
