mistymacallister: Someone was asking if I write ‘chick lit’. I wonder how many times Arthur Conan Doyle, or Edgar Rice Burroughs, was asked: “Hey, do you write ‘dick lit’?” ••• No, I don’t write chick lit, I’m not a fan of the term, of the genre, but I write about women, yes, pretty much exclusively. I write about women who fight monsters after dark in Houston, like Zoe Dark in 'Seven past midnight’, a story I wrote years ago when I first moved to Houston and I had this idea to write a paranormal romance because 'paranormal romance’ was a very popular genre at the time but the 'romance’ didn’t quite work for me so Zoe doesn’t fall in love in this book because she has other stuff to do, like graduate from college etc. I also write about women who are private detectives, like Laura Flint and Clara Stone in ‘Roses are red’ and 'Violets are blue’; they’re spinoffs from 'Seven past midnight’, where Clara Stone is Zoe’s adoptive mom but when I was figuring out who Clara Stone is, I started liking young Clara Stone and Laura Flint - she’s so cool, SO COOL! - so they will be in a novel soon set in the 80’s where they’ll kick some ass. And I also write about women who save the world, like Mihaela Albu in 'The Future comes from the sky’, a speculative short story that I wrote for a sci-fi contest. And I write about women who buy abandoned houses in the middle of nowhere, well, Oregon, not really the middle of nowhere, and then start opening doors to clean up and well, well, surprise, some doors are not meant to be open, like in 'The Door in the Wall’. I was always fascinated with stories that have a limited setup, like a house, a train etc. and I wanted to write one. Oh, yeah, and I’m also fascinated with what it was like being a woman in 1800s, so I wrote ‘An Affair at Oxbridge’, but I’m planning a novel and a screenplay with the characters, Lady Clarke and Doctor Adler. ••• Yep, there you have it! I’ve also written erotica but I don’t write that anymore, I haven’t in years. To be honest, erotica was the hardest for me to write.
