Stanley Akita was part of the first group of replacements as he joined up with the 100th in France. Meeting up with the Hawaii boys, he chuckled as they told them, “You people are lucky because the 442nd sent the well-trained best soldiers to you guys!” In reality, the word was that these first soldiers were the “unwanted ones,” the ones the Captains did not like and sent over early! Recalling his first battle at Anzio, he says, “I think I can owe my life to them (100th). They were teaching us what to do and what not to do.” Stanley feels fortunate he was with the “bigger brothers” teaching him during battle. Eventually, he got acclimated to the rigors of war, picking up dead bodies, and eating right next to all the bodies of dead German soldiers. Stanley says you start taking things like that for granted, “dead bodies here, dead bodies there, you know guys dying.” Read rest of Stanley Akita story in “The Go For Broke Spirit” https://www.thegoforbrokespirit.com/ -- source link
