Now here is something interesting I ran across - 18th century embroidered pockets for ladies. The 1st photo is an authentic example while the 2nd is from a modern replica as shown on www. connectingthreads.com. I think it is an ideal project to try out a style like Crewel embroidery I imagine some modern application could be using it as a small handbag or if you have a really great design, maybe even making it a little larger and turning it into a kitchen apron.
