The one where they are watching us to see if they can afford to let us live or not based on which one of these we develop first: 1) a more peaceful and cooperative nature, or 2) enough technology to become an actual threat. Considering the amount of times civilization has barely survived and taken huge leaps backwards because we are hyper-competitive and haven’t been able to cooperate or - you know - our slight tendency to kill each other, I genuinely think we are close to being as aggressive as it is possible to be and still maintain a civilization long enough make advanced technology. Approaching a theoretical limit.There is a reason we fear aliens: We think they’ll be like us. There is a reason the Drake Equation includes “time between development of technology till self-destruction” - and it’s usually estimated to be quite low. We have a data point of 1 and we’re not a stellar example. It’s quite possible that they view us as having the potential for being the biggest bad out there, but since they are nicer than us they are giving us a chance to prove them wrong. -- source link
