tallulalusa:ok i am tired of people shitting on stonehenge and its related structures, foreigners and brits alike. if you people were educated even a smidge on stonehenge you would know that it’s an impressive feat of mathematics and geometric calculations, as well as intensive dedication through hard labour. people of this time were studying the stars just like all other astronomers throughout the world. they were performing surgery ffs!and yeah, i can imagine next to the pyramids of giza stonehenge doesn’t look too impressive. it’s a sad fact that prior to the roman empire, the history of Europe, especially Northern Europe, hasn’t been conserved nearly as well as that of Africa and Asia. that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.how ignorant is it to assume that just because you see a small trace of what’s left there must have been nothing impressive beforehand? that’s the equivalent of pointing to the Fori Imperiali and saying, “that’s it ? it’s just a bunch of crumbling rock! pathetic!” how ignorant. how dismissive.yeah, i get that in the light of colonialism and it’s long-reaching consequences we’re discovering just how much western and European society likes to downplay the massive achievements of every non-white country and culture and it’s important we keep that in mind when looking at advances in all academic areas. yeah, i like a good joke at white people’s expense as much as anyone.but completely tearing down humanity’s contributions to society and knowledge just because it happened in europe is not going to balance the scales. shitting on the achievements of those ancestors who happen to be white isn’t going to magically shed more light on the achievements of people of colour. you’re just doing it to make yourself feel better, you’re not actually contributing anything or helping anyone. actually what you’re doing is potentially dangerous: you’re erasing history. yeah, what a hot take. “white people in the past have been shitty about discrediting brown people so we’re just going to dismiss everything of value in european history because it helps me feel better about my embarrassment and outrage.” look at you, a real activist. a true fighter of the system. revelling in your ignorance. have a star it doesn’t matter where you come from or who hurt you in the past, belittling someone’s culture is not edgy or radical or cute and it’s never ok. anyway stonehenge and prehistoric europe are fascinating af. go watch a documentary or something. and in a case of wonderful coincidence i recently came across this post:coolancientstuffa series of monoliths in south america - pretty much the same thing as stonehenge. so which arrogant ignoramus is going to point at those and call them pathetic and the people who built them weak? -- source link
