The first women that would have been brought to the new world would have brought with them the fashion and luxuries they could from Spain. Very few women actually ended up in the Americas in the 16th century and instead began settling in the Americas more in the 17th through 18th centuries. However, many men would leave for the Americas as single men and settle into lives with the women native to the South and Central America. For the wealthy and prestigious showing wealth meant showing many layers of clothing of finely crafted fabric, details and expensive materials such as silk, gold and jewels. Embroidery would have adorned many of the items that women of the time period wore and would often be done by the women that wore the item. Lace was also a very expensive and coveted item for many men and women. Since lace had to be hand-made with delicate fingers and required hours of work to produce the fancy collars we associate with the time period. -- source link
