This post is not focused on say, Jewish Lifecycle guides or Introduction materials but the specific concerns of conversion and Adult Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Books: Choosing a Jewish Life: A Handbook for People Converting to Judaism and for Their Family and Friends, by Anita Diamant | The most recommended guide to conversion out there - this is a classic for a reason. Anita Diamant’s book is wonderful and indispensable. She is writing for a liberal perspective but it is quite generally applicable. If you’re going to buy any book, buy this one. The Gerus Guide - The Step By Step Guide to Conversion to Orthodox Judaism, by Rabbi Aryeh Moshen - A large guide for the convert to Orthodoxy. I am not familiar with this, but I have seen good reviews. Embracing the Covenant: Converts to Judaism Talk About Why & How, by Rabbi Allan L. Berkowitz, Patti Moskovitz - Mostly personal stories. Conversion to Judaism: A Guidebook, by Lawrence J. Epstein - I’m less familiar with this book, although I think I saw it recommended somewhere.Choosing Judaism, By Lydia Kukoff - a Conservative/Masorti focused guide for converts.Judaism’s Ten Best Ideas: A Brief Guide for Seekers, by Dr. Arthur Green - short and sweet, this is a pocket sized guide.Exploring Judaism: A Reconstructionist Approachby Rebecca T. Alpert, Jacob J. Staub - a more general guide exploring Judaism from the Reconstructionist movement, less about converts specifically.Rediscovering Judaism: Bar and Bat Mitzvah for Adultsby Kerry M. Olitzky, Ronald H. Isaacs - written from a Reform perspective, this roughly addresses the liberal movements and provides questions and exercises.Why Be Jewish?: A Testament, by Edgar Bronfman. Not a conversion guide, but an affirmation of the choice to live Jewishly. The Choosing-A Rabbi’s Journey from Silent Nights to High Holy Days by Andrea Myers - This is a story of a Lesbian Jewish Rabbi who is also a convert! It’s charming and engaging.
